Statement from AMPS on Vow Becoming First to Secure Cultivated Meat Approval in Australia–New Zealand — Major Milestone for the Global Industry

The Association for Meat, Poultry, and Seafood Innovation (AMPS) congratulates
member company Vow on securing Australia and New Zealand’s first-ever
regulatory approval for a cultivated meat product. This decision by Food Standards
Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) is a historic moment in the global advancement
of cultivated protein and reflects the growing global momentum for the emerging
industry.

Vow’s unique cultivated quail products—including whipped pâté, foie gras, and
edible tallow candle among other innovations—are now officially approved for
commercial sale with a robust launch plan to 30 regional food service partners,
followed by a major retail launch. This achievement greatly expands the scope of
worldwide cultivated meat availability.

Australia and New Zealand are major meat-consuming regions, with Australia
ranking third globally in per capita meat consumption. The approval signals a
major endorsement of food innovation through the establishment of clear,
science-based standards, with rigorous safety evaluation and proactive policy
framework expected to help accelerate future product review and approval.
FSANZ aligns closely with Codex Alimentarius and has been recognized by the
FDA as providing comparable food safety oversight, with a special agreement to
mutually recognize determinations. It is widely respected for its precautionary
approach, similar to the EU’s EFSA, while balancing scientific risk assessment
with regulatory pragmatism. We hope the robust FSANZ process will enable swift
approval of Vow in the US and other major markets in the near term.

AMPS remains committed to supporting international regulatory harmonization
and science-based pathways for cultivated meat, poultry, and seafood in the U.S.
and worldwide.
